A "Chalazion" is a very small lump of the upper or lower eyelid, caused as a result of inflammation of a gland of the eyelid. The Chalazion may be soft and fluid-filled or firmer. A Chalazion is also referred to as a "Meibomian Cyst", "tarsal cyst", or "conjunctival granuloma".
The eyelid glands responsible are called the Meibomian glands, but are also known as the 'palpebral glands', 'tarsal glands', or 'tarsoconjunctival glands' (hence the alternative names). They are sebaceous (oil secreting) glands and there are up to 40 in each of the upper and lower lids. The tiny gland openings are just behind the lid lashes at the lid margins and allow the gland to discharge a thick liquid mixture of oil and mucus, called sebum. The Sebum lubricates the surface of the eye.
Occasionally, these gland openings may become blocked, resulting in a build up of secretions and resultant swelling.
