A Phlebectomy, more accurately termed an "Ambulatory Phlebectomy" is the surgical removal of all or part of a vein. It is a procedure often used in conjunction with Endo-Venous Laser Ablation or Endo-Venous Radiofrequency Ablation treatment of varicose veins, to enhance the effectiveness and physical appearances of the treatment.
An Ambulatory Phlebectomy is an out-patient procedure performed under local anaesthetic, and is particularly useful in the removal of large, tortuous, varicosities lying close to the skin surface.
During the Phlebectomy, small incisions of 1 or 2mm length are made, through which the varicose veins are removed, using a vein hook. The exact form that the procedure takes will depend on the surgeon performing the treatment and the choice of vein hooks in use.
