A Sialogram (also known as Sialography) is an X-ray study of the salivary ducts (Parotid and/or submandibular, in which a contrast material is injected into the salivary duct (within the mouth) to demonstrate the structure and calibre of the ducts.
A Sialogram is used to detect a stricture or blockage (for example stones, tumour) of the salivary ducts.
The Clinician (usually a Radiologist) locates the salivary duct and a small thin tube is inserted. A small amount of X-Ray contrast is injected through this tube and X-Rays taken. A small amount of lemon juice may be given, which will cause the gland to empty and further xrays taken to demonstrate any obstruction to flow.
